My Halloween viewing, at the recommendation of Marla & Obadiah, was “Mandy,” which I hadn’t see yet.

Holy cats. That movie is amazing. Maybe the best movie to depict what it’s like to be on acid for far longer than you would like.

Of course it’s set in Northern California / Southern Oregon.

My only observation: depending on the time of year Mandy is set, “Shout At The Devil” might not have been released yet (which came out in September of ’83, and most of Mandy looks like Spring of Summer weather, though I could be wrong).

If I’m right, what this means is that Mandy was a Crue fan going back to their first album, and not their second. While its not an anachronism, it was an interesting detail in a movie full of strange and meaningful details. “Stick To Your Guns” and “Live Wire” were not particular huge hits from their early work, and while they certainly gained fans from that first record, “Shout At The Devil,” seems like the reference they would like us to come to.

However, “Stick To Your Guns,” actually has lyrics that seem more relevant to the film. I’m not sure there’s any evidence that Mandy was a fan from before they were on a major label, but in my head cannon: Mandy is an OG metalhead, who was into a lot of metal bands before almost anyone else.

Get a grip on yourself
Get in shape for tonight

Take a look at yourself or your dreams
You’re losing sight
It just ain’t right, it just ain’t right

Hey man look at me I’m screaming
Are you watching me bleed, are you believin’

You got to stick to you guns
What’s right for you ain’t right for everyone
Ain’t right for everyone
You got to stick to your guns
What’s right for you ain’t right for everyone
Ain’t right for everyone

Too much too soon, too much for you
Every day has a hero, don’t it though
Don’t let it go
You gotta fight, it just ain’t right

Hey man, look at me I’m screaming
Are you watching the green are you believin’

You got to stick to your guns
What’s right for you ain’t right for everyone
It ain’t right for everyone
You got to stick to your guns
What’s right for you ain’t right for everyone
Ain’t right for everyone

Hey man, look at me I’m screaming
Are you watching the green are you believin’

You got to stick to your guns
What’s right for you ain’t right for everyone
It ain’t right for everyone
You got to stick to your guns
What’s right for you ain’t right for everyone
Ain’t right for everyone…

Come along

One of the first LPs Marla got for me when we first started dating. Mad Magazine “twists rock & roll,” in a delightfully weird, Halloween-y sort of way. The reason to get this record is for the “Nose Job” song, which is ridiculous. (“Thanks Lux Interior, for turning me onto that tune.”)

Remember The Adventures of Marcus Little? It’s back, and this time, on KMUZ 88.5 Fm & 100.7 Fm! Starting November 12th, and through December 17th, all six episodes of The Adventures of Marcus Little will run as part of the winter programming for Somewhere In-Between: A Radio Zine.

The Adventures of Marcus Little has not aired on KMUZ.org before, and this particular story is meant to be heard on the radio, especially given that it ties in to a feature film where you can hear this radio broadcast, too! It’s all quite incredible, and this particular broadcast includes behind-the-scenes stories, and a new story set in the same universe! You won’t want to miss this rare radio treat, so I suggest that you tune in! You will not regret it.

Our final Halloween re-run this year is a Horror Double Feature! Hour One contains a MST3K version of the film “Horror Island,” a corny “ghost” story set in a castle that must be heard to be believed. Then, in my best Horror Host voice, I present: The Creeping Terror! With music and samples that complete the experience, and makes it an experience unto itself. These and many other shows are available, all for free in the halloween feel. You should join us, and experience only the finest in Halloween Programming!

HORROR DOUBLE FEATURE!

My good friend Obadiah joins me for a two-hour exploration of some of the more literary ways that we can spend the holiday. Put this one on when you want to hear some stories, because both Obadiah and I read stories, play records with plenty of Halloween content, and in Hour Two, Nathan Carson reads an Ambrose Bierce story while Erin Jane Laroue performs the backing music. This one has a lot in it, and we discuss Obadiah’s horror zine, The Audient Void. Lot’s of great stuff, all waiting for your podcatching device of choice.

My good friend DJ Victrola joins me for a two-hour in-studio guest spot, where she tells ghost stories, we take calls from listeners who tell their experiences, we debut a tune by Cyclopsycho with a seasonal flavor, and we add in as many ghost songs as possible. This was part of a series of shows, for several years in a row, where we would take listener calls and have them tell their stories, so if you like this kind of stuff, there’s a lot more available!

Victrola’s Tales! (or, “Cottage Street”)

Join me, Diamanda Galas, Ed Wood, Bob & Ray, Maury Laws, Zacherle and a cast of thousands, as we troll through, “The Black Cat & Other Frightening Tales,” with four hours of vintage Halloween tunes. This is the perfect one for atmosphere: rockin’ tunes, scary stories, Halloween SFX, and all sorts of Halloween fun. We recommend you put this one on during a party, and it’ll give your guests something to rock to!

With over 100 hours of Halloween Radio content, we are not surprised that you are digging through our back catalog, looking for the perfect shows to listen to as you enjoy your Holiday. With that in mind, I’ll be highlighting the four shows that I re-ran on the show, so you can enjoy some choice programming.

However, I do recommend you subscribe to the feed and just listen straight through to the back-episodes. We feature shows with: Classics From The Crypt (Vintage Halloween Songs), Lost In The Punk-in Patch (Halloween Punk Songs), Listeners calling in with their scary ghost stories, Experimental Halloween Tunes, all of Rikki’s Halloween Programs from her short-lived Closet Radio, Old Time Horror Radio Dramas, me doing my best “Horror Host” voice, and I occasionally give a movie the MST3K treatment, in audio format.

All of that, and so much more. Find the best way to celebrate in style with “Austin’s Annual Halloween Spook-tacular!” Now available on a podcasting device of your choosing. (Or: you can download them from the website, too.)

Worth the price of admission (attention Wendella Mermelstein):

From about 54:30 – 58:00(ish): You get to hear Bobcat Goldthwait discusses his relationship with David Bowie, during the period where they had discussed the notion of doing a “Martin & Lewis” style double-act. Apparently, the project got far enough along where songs were selected, and Bowie booked some comically small venues, thinking that they could try the show out (it never came to be; Bobcat instead decided to open for / tour with Nirvana, at the height of both of their fame).

Bobcat continues to mention their time in a studio where Bowie related writing, “All The Young Dudes,” another time where Bobcat saw (and then roasted) Bowie on the Glass Spider tour, and the times that Bobcat and his brother played music together, where they made Bowie play drums (turns out Bowie is pretty good on drums). Sounds like they were genuinely friends, who liked to pal around, and were looking for a way to collaborate professionally that just never worked out.

Bobcat doesn’t usually make up stories like this. He’s had crazy encounters with mega celebrities his entire life, and that was before he was the director on the Tonight Show. So this seems particularly believable.

If you missed our “4th Sundae” Appearance on UB RADIO SALON, you get another chance to hear us today, at 9 AM PST. This is your chance to listen to our shenanigans at an early hour, while you’re returning e-mail and looking at your schedule for the day. This one’s a lot of fun, and we even make some noise eventually! You should check it out…

As mentioned elsewhere: I’ve been invited to join the UB RADIO SALON family, as univac and I take on the task of helping out every fourth Sundae. (Wait? That’s today!) This means that, 12 times a year, you can count on us to be a part of the show, cooking up our brand of dada / cut-up nonsense. We encourage you to tune into DFM RTV INT at 5 PM PST, to check out the fun! Hopefully I can pick it up quickly. Being the new guy is sort of hard…

uBradio Salon Presents: Soda Jerks! 4th Sundaes on DFM.nu!

Date Night (One of Three): Marla and I were invited by a couple of friends to visit the Davis Graveyard in Milwaukie, OR. I had never been, or never heard of it, so it was certainly a great way to spend an evening.

Essentially: a couple who are big Halloween enthusiasts (and excellent builders and makers) got a huge house on a huge corner lot in Milwaukie, and since the early 2000s, have gone out of their way to transform the lot into The Davis Graveyard. Usually, you can only walk past the front and soak in the ambience. But you could pay to go inside, get to actually wander around behind the scenes, have a few drinks, enter a costume contest, and walk away with a goodie bag.

I’m still very apprehensive of crowds, but this was a lot of fun, and the decorations and whatnot were fantastic. And: shame on my friends for not telling me about this sooner! Certainly, I’ve only been able to drive on my own for a little while now, but I’ll be sure to visit at least once a year from now on. What a cool place.

I’m very excited to announce a new, monthly radio gig that I’m very stoked to be a part of! Starting this Sunday, and every fourth Sunday, myself and univac will be helping make UB Radio Salon with Das Ala Ubuibi & Ninah Pxe! Here’s the details regarding our first show:

Starting this Sunday and every 4th Sundae of the month, two new permanent (until they die) interns at uBradio Salon’s Chakra Chimp uBkitchens have volunteered to entertain your ear-holes monthly, curating a cacophonic soda fountain of bits of words accompanied by noises, via the magic of the internet.

Reluctantly sponsored by veteran sodajerks pxe & dAs, your pain will be theirs as well.

Make sure to bring a pocketful of quarters—you’ll want to play these sodajerks’ juke box.

When we were DJs at KWVA in the ‘90s, both Colin Hix and I both went about the task of copying as much as we could from the station’s collection. While I was madly copying to cassettes, Colin made very nice cdrs, with a lot of color covers. He recently gifted me these, which are gonna be great for using in the car.

Do I know anyone who’s participating in NaNoWriMo this year? Was thinking about taking this on again. I finished last year, but I’m not entirely happy with the story I wrote. I have a new idea that I think might actually work. Maybe we could start a writing support group? Or something…

I got a wonderful package in the mail today, that included the new cassette by univac! But certainly, the art prints, bonus CDs, stickers and postcards, and other goodies are not to be forgotten. Thanks a bunch! I can’t wait to check out this tape.

I’m sure there’s a few gems among these CDs. Not photographed are two different live Devo concerts, and a Live Negativland show, too. Lots to consume here… thanks univac!

Here’s the run-down of everything that we have going on for Halloween, 2021 this year! We have three BRAND NEW releases, three older releases, and a Halloween Podcast, all for your enjoyment! Over 100 hours of Holiday Entertainment, for your next party or gathering. There’s plenty to choose from, and our products are not suffering from supply chair shortages. Get yours today!

If you have been curious about the musical postcard game, for the first time since I started the project, you can nor order individual cards for your friends, loved ones, or just for yourself! Each card comes with a half-hour of new music, or in some cases, a brand new single by one of the more punk / rock / space grunge oriented-bands. And best of all: they are two dollars each. A very inexpensive way to check out a number of the projects I’m involved in. (And, if you want bonus tracks, behind the scenes info, full color cards when possible, and other goodies: you have to sign up for the Lemonade Stand / Patreon. You won’t regret it!
https://austinrich.org/postcards/

Lemonade Stand supporters can actually hear November’s Musical Postcard NOW, by going to our Patreon Page. You’ll over and hour of new music by a new project that hasn’t even been announced yet! I’ll give you a hint: it’s over 8 year in the making, and it features myself and Trevor Rudd of Moth Hunter Mods making strange, electronic sounds.

This project isn’t really being announced / revealing until November, but supporters can get the full story, and hear the tunes (and a bonus track) RIGHT NOW. Everyone else will have to wait until the card comes out the first week of November.

Just another reason to support local artists: you get cool stuff NOW, and you don’t have to deal with supply chain shortages.
